The Mental Game

Focus. The brain controls the body, this everyone knows.

When it comes to handstands or any skill training one has to create new neural pathways for the body to learn the skill.

Nothing-new right?

But often when it comes to skill-training people fail at this point. In this article I want to discuss the mental game around a handstand.

Now I am not going to talk about why you can’t do one yet and why people give up, that is for another day. Rather the focus of this post will be around the mindset needed when training a handstand for 10 minutes or an hour the mindset must be the same.

When approaching to train a handstand one needs to have the ability to focus intently. One cannot just go threw the motions in a handstand. If this is done the participant will fall and fall, frustration will build to extreme heights.

Everyone who can stay up on their hands are focusing on keeping their balance and this is what you have to train your brain to do. This will be quite tiring; I personally have found that if my mind is else where “like what I am having for lunch” I don’t really stay up.

I have also found when training people it’s the ones that can push their “focus” as it where, to keep fighting are the ones that stay up longer and learn faster.

So how does one improve one’s handstand focus?

This is a good question.

Once again in my personal opinion I think everyone will have a slightly different way of improving it. A good starting place would be to when beginning to do a drill is focus on where your weight is in your hands. Aim to “see” with your hands. A good hand balancer does not need sight to stay up but balances by feel alone. The more the mind can be connected to the hands the better the balance will be.

Of course this in theory is very easy to understand but in principle is another thing entirely.

The saying perfect practice makes practice comes to mind.

The more you practice but with intent to stay up the better you will become and the mind will adapt to being able to focus on staying up.
